Hey y'all! Welcome or welcome back to my blog! In case you didn't know, this past week I went to Cumberland Island for a school trip. To see what I packed on my trip, click the button below to read my Cumberland Island packing guide. RIf you've already read the post, you know that I couldn't pack much clothing of my own, because we had to be in school uniform. However, on some of the days we could wear whatever we wanted. Without further ado, let's get into the post! Tuesday, March 28th Since I had my bags packed the night before, it made waking up at 5:00 in the morning much easier. We had to be at my school at 5:30 to depart on our journey to the Okefenokee swamp. We arrived at the swamp around 12:00, then we ate lunch. We got back on the bus to drive down the road a little further to see the Chesser family homestead. It was this big area of land with a house, and lots of little extra rooms, like a smoke house. After that, we got back on the bus and rode down the rode some more and we arrived at this long board walk (I'd say about 2 miles). We all got off and walked the boardwalk until we reached this huge lookout tower at the very end. We then hopped back on the bus and drove back to our original destination where we ate lunch. From there, we jumped on 3 boats to take us into the swamp. Let me tell you, I probably saw the most alligators I will ever see in my entire life. I didn't count, but someone on another boat said they saw 76! We then went into the gift shop where I bought a t-shirt and an Okefenokee sticker. After driving an hour back to our hotel, we got ready for dinner. We drove about 30 minutes down to this cute little town called St. Mary's for dinner. They gave us four options to choose from: Bessie's, Riverside Café, St. Mary's Seafood and More, and Pauly's Café. About 9 other kids and I chose Bessie's, a hamburger and chicken fingers kind of place. Since we got done with dinner quickly, we had time to order ice cream and walk around the town. The lady who was working in the restaurant told us about something they did in the town of St. Mary's. Kids that live in the town paint little rocks and hide them wherever they want. If you find one, you can keep it or re-hide it. She gave each of us a rock that they found so we could hide them. I definitely recommend Bessie's if you ever go to St. Mary's. Keep your eyes peeled for painted rocks, too! After a long day, everyone was ready for bed, so we got back to the hotel, showered up, and fell asleep. Wednesday, March 29th On Wednesday, we woke up around 6:30 to get ready and eat breakfast. We then got on the bus and drove back to St. Mary's where we were the night before. There is no bridge to Cumberland Island, so you have to take a ferry. The ferry ride was around 30 minutes, leaving me plenty of time to take tons of pictures! This day we could wear whatever shirt we wanted, so I wore my mint green Bartholomew the Original shirt because it is so comfy, perfect for our long hike. We finally arrived at Cumberland Island, and it is so pretty! Our tour guide took us through a trail in the forest to get to the other side of the island. When we got to the other side of the island, we walked on the beach for seining. If you don't know what seining is, six people drag a long net slanted against the ocean floor to catch fish. We tried 5 times and caught one fish. After all those failed attempts, we had free time on the beach for about five minutes. My shirt got soaked, so I had to change it into another t-shirt. We traveled back into the forest where we ate lunch. Then, we got to climb a live oak tree (the ones that were in the forest). These twisty trees are perfect for climbing. We then made our way back into the beach. We walked around three miles down the beach to observe some of the things that wash up on the shore. We even saw a horse nibbling on the grass in one of the dunes! If you don't know, Cumberland Island is famous for the feral horses that roam around the island. That basically means the government doesn't allow the people who work on the island can't take care of them. You may wonder how they got there. A long time ago, people were visiting the island and left the horses there to survive on their own. {If you want to twin with me use my code "TGP25" at sashka co to get 25% off your purchase!} After we finally got off the beach, we ventured into the marsh. We followed a trail which led to the old homes of the people who once owned the island. After we checked out the first few houses, we had a bathroom break where we saw two other horses and an armadillo! The next thing we did was walk to the Dungeness mansion. This house had 41 (41!) bedrooms for the owner of the island. Somehow a fire started and burned part of the mansion down. Around this time, we only had about one more mile to walk! We got back to the ferry and started back to St. Mary's. When we got back to the hotel, we could eat wherever we wanted (within walking distance). Some of my friends and I ordered pizza. We played some games, and then fell asleep for the next day. Thursday, March 30th On Thursday, we got to wake up a little later, around 7:30 to pack our bags and for breakfast. We got on the bus to travel about 30 minutes to Fort Clinch. We only had about 30 minutes at the fort to look around. After that we drove about an hour to Skidaway Island. We stopped at Chick-fil-a for lunch before we arrived. We took mini classes on the island learning about sea creatures. We took a little trail through the forest to observe plants and wildlife. We then went back inside the building to see the aquarium part. This "aquarium" was very small, but I took a lot of pictures of the animals. After checking out the animals, we boarded the bus and started back home.
I hope you enjoyed this post, and I'm super sorry it was really long! Thanks so much for reading! xoxo, The Georgian Prep
